Philips participates in the DOE "L Prize" contest with a 60W LED bulb that can replace ordinary household light bulbs

April 09, 2023

Recently, Philips participated in the Bright Tomorrow Lighting Prize (L Prize) competition organized by the US Department of Energy (DOE) with a 60W LED bulb that can replace ordinary household light bulbs.

According to the solution, the "L Prize" is the first technology competition sponsored by DOE to encourage lighting equipment manufacturers to develop high-quality, high-efficiency LED products to replace ordinary light bulbs. The goal of the DOE is to promote product quality and energy efficiency, while at the same time reducing the cost of the technology and thus being more widely accepted by the market. The previous DOE announcement, the 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, prompted DOE to set up the "L Prize" contest in May 2008. Legislation poses a challenge to the lighting industry, requiring the development of lighting products that can replace 60W incandescent lamps and PAR 38 halogen lamps as soon as possible, while developing "new 21st century lighting products."

Philips' 60W LED bulbs, which replace ordinary household light bulbs, will undergo rigorous and extensive evaluation, including independent laboratory-led performance testing, on-site assessments by common utilities or other partners, and at various extremes. Long-term lumen maintenance test and load test under conditions. The DOE expressed the hope that more companies will participate, whether large companies or small companies are welcome. Participating companies can participate in different competitions according to different product types until one winner is public. Winners will receive cash prizes and prizes from other sponsors. In addition to the cash prize, the first winning company that fully meets the requirements of the competition will receive a federal purchase agreement, public project or other incentive prize.

According to the DOE, there are already 27 public utilities and energy efficiency organizations joining the “L Prize” sponsors. They have agreed to work together to reward the winners of the L Prize competition and help promote and deploy the winning products. Of course, winning the L Prize is not an easy task. It must meet the stringent requirements set by the DOE, including performance, quality, longevity, cost, and practicality, and should be suitable for large-scale promotion and high-volume manufacturing requirements.

Attachment: At present, DOE requirements for replacing LED bulbs for 60W incandescent lamps:
• Light efficiency over 90 lm/W, exceeding all current incandescent lamps and most compact fluorescent lamps.
• Energy consumption is less than 10 watts (compared to a 60W incandescent lamp)
• Light output exceeds 900 lumens, equivalent to the brightness of a 60W incandescent lamp • CRI index over 90
• The color temperature is between 2700K and 3000K, which can emit the same warm white light as incandescent lamps.
