AC LED chip factory expands layout of HV LEDs to capture lighting opportunities

AC LED chip manufacturers have increased the proportion of high-voltage (HV) LED chip development. In the case that AC LED technology is difficult to break through, the brightness is slow to catch up with the traditional direct current (DC) LED. As a result, AC LED suppliers are competing to add HV LED layouts with both luminous efficiency and thermal advantages to compensate for the lost revenue from the AC LED product line.

Recently, AC LED chip and packaging manufacturer Seoul Semiconductor has developed AC LED module Acrich2 with luminous efficiency up to 100 lumens per watt through up to sixteen HV LEDs with rectifiers, and with integrated multi-cell (Integrated Multi -cell) technology, boosting power factor (PF) to 0.99, saving up to 50% of power consumption compared to the previous generation.

Industry insiders pointed out that because AC LED luminous efficiency is difficult to meet the lighting market requirements, in the past, actively develop candle light and small bulb application layout, but the price is higher than DC LED. In view of this, Seoul Semiconductor is trying to build AC by using HV LED with rectifier. LED modules actively rush to the general-purpose lighting market.

However, the core technologies used by HV LED chip manufacturers such as Jingyuan Optoelectronics, Seoul Semiconductor, and Samsung are different. Therefore, the HC LED architecture developed is quite different, and the luminous efficiency is also very different. At present, the HV LED luminous efficiency of Epistar has reached 150lm/W; Seoul Semiconductor and Samsung are below 100lm/W.

The industry believes that increasing brightness and price reduction is the primary task of HV LED's expansion of the power sector. Take the HV LED of Seoul Semiconductor's 8-watt 600-lumen AC LED module as an example. The overall module price is over US$3; however, Nichia DC The price per watt of LED is about NT$8. After conversion, the price of eight DC LED modules is only about US$3. Obviously, the cost of HV LED still has room to fall.
